Healthy Weight for Children
In August of 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy
statement regarding the care and advocacy role to be played by healthcare providers of children. However, at this time,
neither tools nor training have been provided to reduce the percentage of children with significant weight problems.
As part of our ongoing Healthy Weight for Children Initiative, the
Connecticut Center for Primary Care has distributed Body Mass Index (BMI) charts to every primary care provider in the
state. We encourage providers to use this chart as a first step in tracking a child’s weight history. This measurement can
also serve as a starting point for a patient/parent/provider discussion of weight issues. If you are interested in receiving
a BMI chart, please
e-mail us with your name and practice location.
